Freud, Incest, Murder, and Oedipus the King Essay -- Oedipus Rex
Freud, Incest, Murder, and Oedipus Rex (the King) à à à à A Freudian analysis of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex (the King) would show that Oedipus truly contained an incestuous nature. This was revealed not only by Oedipus' marriage to his own mother, by whom he had children, but also by his irrational preference for his daughters, Antigone and Ismene. While the attention he showered to his daughters was profound and sexually tinged, he dismissed his sons as creatures able to take care of themselves. Although he was unconsciously attracted to his daughters, he also feared that his daughters will become social outcasts and will be unable to marry. à à à à à à à à à à à When Freud in his Interpretation of Dreams made his now famous observations about Oedipus the King, he naturally focused on the main issue: that Oedipus killed his father and married his mother.(1) A further Freudian analysis of the play reveals another issue that came to dominate psychoanalysis: the preference of Oedipus for his daughters. Oedipus's preference for Antigone and Ismene appears only at the very end of the play, but it completes the picture of incest and murder in the family. à à à à à à à à à à à Although mentioned at intervals in the play, the children of Oedipus do not appear until the last few pages. After he discovers his real parents and blinds himself, Oedipus turns his attention to his children, who are innocent victims of events beyond their control. But his reaction is incredibly biased in favor of the daughters: Oedipus. Now, for my sons, Be not concerned for them: they can, being men, Fend for themselves, wherever they may be: But my unhappy daughters, my two girls,à whose chairs were always set beside my own At table - they who shared in every dish T... .... Business Paradigm :: essays research papers
Key Point 1: How does Corporate Restructuring affect our Society? In the early 1990ââ¬â¢s, corporate restructuring was being reported in newspapers and magazines almost daily. In 1995 alone, domestic mergers totaled more than $450 Billion. In just the first week of the second quarter of 1996, merger activity totaled $28.3 Billion. To name a couple of corporations that were involved were Bell Telephone systems and AT & T. Pros and cons come from such large mergers and acquisitions. A good aspect that came from the Bell merger was that they were able to provide service to 30 million residential and business customers in seven states west of the Mississippi. On the other hand, a negative aspect that arrived from mergers is that often times, after the merger had taken place, the companies decided to downsize to make their new corporations more efficient. Long-time employees are now being pushed out of the company. Investors and analystââ¬â¢s alike, seemed to respect the companies that inflicted the deepest cuts and fired the greatest number of workers. Executive pay rose along with corporate profits and productivity. The compensation packages for those individuals laid-off were tied to job performance. This created a huge amount of hostility. Mergers also created fear amongst the employees. The fear of job loss eroded the loyalty between employees and their companies. Mergers, however, are sometimes inevitable. The corporations must find ways to stay competitive, not only internationally, but globally. Key Point 2: Social Responsiveness Management Large corporations are responsible for providing the consumer with a safe and reliable product. They are also legally obligated to ensure what the company is offering the consumer is what the consumer gets. Take the in-class video on U-Haul for example. U-Haul stated that each vehicle is routinely inspected to ensure customer safety. The inspection log would have a recent date annotating the last inspection. A team of reporters visited several U-Haul subsidiaries throughout the United States. The findings were shocking. It was found after having professional mechanics inspect the vehicles, that most were unsafe to drive. This negligence on U-haulââ¬â¢s behalf places the consumers life in jeopardy. It has become a huge issue after several fatalities that resulted from U-haulââ¬â¢s vehicle negligence. Laws should become more stringent on companies that provides this type of service to consumers. Key Point 3: Code of Ethics and Business Conduct (Nuclear Energy) The debate over whether nuclear energy is a socially acceptable has gone on for years.

Taco Bell Marketing
08 Fall Introduction Hong Kong is known as being a very multinational and diversified city not only in Asia but also in the world. Not only is Hong Kong a paradise from a financial perspective, but it is also a great country in terms of the standard of living. As Hong Kong has a very diversified culture and a mix of various ethnicities, there isnââ¬â¢t a lack of food options and results suggest that 1 to 4 Hong Kong respondents prefer to dine out and prefer to spend up to HKD$1500 a month.Which looking at the results creates the ideal opportunity in opening a relatively new fast food concept, which provides a different cuisine from the current trends in a fast food format into the Hong Kong market. Environmental Analysis SWOT Analysis Strengths| Weaknesses| 1. Established a huge brand awareness and loyalty. Tremendous amounts of consumer satisfaction. | 1. Local consumer tastes need to be adapted towards Mexican cuisine. | 2. High Quality products, at relatively reasonable prices. | 2. Property prices are relatively expensive, high operating costs. | 3.Quite new concept could create attention and buzz. | 3. Not a very health conscious menu could be unappealing to target users. | 4. Sole Mexican cuisine fast food concept chain. | | Opportunities | Threats| 1. Introduce Home/Office delivery services. | 1. Existing well established fast food chains, e. g. McDonalds, KFC, Subway, Cafe de Coral etc. | 2. Experiment with local needs/taste, incorporate local flavors and delicacies. | 2. May not be appreciated by the Hong Kong public. | 3. Possibility to develop drive through, to create ease of accessibility for consumers. 3. Existing Mexican restaurants that have established brand loyalty amongst Hong Kong customers. | 4. Establish chains where students and working people can easily access. E. g. office buildings, university campuses, shopping malls etc. | | PEST Analysis Political: The political condition in Hong Kong is relatively stable, hence introducing an Ame rican based fast food chain, wont have any impacts or create any problems from a political aspect. As Hong Kong isnââ¬â¢t facing any political distress or disturbances domestically or internationally. Economical:There are several economical impacts that will incur as Taco Bell starts its operations in Hong Kong. First of all, starting a new fast food chain would create domestic employment, as jobs will be opened up towards the local citizens. Furthermore everyone earning will then pay taxes that will result in an increase in government revenue as the company gradually starts to increase its operations within Hong Kong premises. Social: The social factor also goes on to play a huge role when establishing a new fast food chain, as this acts upon the consumersââ¬â¢ values and beliefs. Many people are known to be relatively health conscious, hence therefore an aspect that Taco Bell will have to consider is the quality and the healthiness of the food that will be served to the local consumers. If the quality of food is compromised it could then impact the demand for the food and could hinder the company growth. Furthermore besides the food element, Taco Bell will also have to consider its Corporate Social Responsibility factors of treating their employees in an adequate manner and rewarding them with what they deserve, and also the environment factor and to maintain the clean environment Hong Kong stresses, nd to reduce waste and place heavy emphasis on packaging their food with recyclable and biodegradable materials. Technological: Technology is shown to be developing and rapidly changing all around the world. Hong Kong is known to be a very technology based country, where majority of the business is done all over technology, hence therefore there are some technological factors to which Taco Bell could adapt to in order to bring positive impacts to the chain. One method would be to adapt company websites on which the menu and other promotional services can be placed, in order to increase convenience for users.Besides websites we are currently living in the Smartphone eras, hence developing apps based on the website and possibly exploiting the opportunities of providing services on-the-go and the ability to deliver from the apps can definitely produce positive growth to the firm. Therefore seeking these technological methods can definitely increase the company value. Hong Kong Fast Food Industry Trends Marketing Analysis As Taco Bell enters the Hong Kong fast food industry, it will have to create immediate effects, due to the existing competitors that have already established themselves within the market.Franchises such as McDonalds and KFC, have established themselves as the pioneers of bring western food to Hong Kong in the late 70s and 80s. Which has triggered further foreign investors such as ââ¬ËPizza Hutââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËBurger Kingââ¬â¢ to name a few. Alongside local entrepreneurs who have obtained a significant market share w ith ââ¬ËCafe de Coralââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËMaximsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËFairwood. ââ¬â¢ McDonalds and KFC are shown to have the top shares in the HK fast food industry at 22% and 14% respectively. Whereas the local franchises combined have only managed 10%.The rest is accumulated with the other foreign franchise chains, which each have market shares below the 10% mark. Which will not significantly impact Taco Bell. Besides fast food, bringing in a Tex-Mex cuisine wonââ¬â¢t be something new to the Hong Kong public, as there are a few Mexican restaurants that provide similar products and caters to the public needs. However Taco Bell tends to hold competitive advantage with the fact that it has an established brand name and the ability to serve quick, good quality and reasonable food items which correlates with what the restaurants serve. Target MarketThe main target market of this fast food chain is mainly aimed at the working population, students and teenagers of Hong Kong. As the f act that it is a fast food chain, its main objective is to provide quick serviced food at reasonable prices, hence incorporating working and student budget people, rather then the high-end consumers of Hong Kong. Besides the financial element, the population who are keen on a different cuisine of food, targeting the diversified population of Hong Kong, and not only to one specific ethnicity but the citizens who are on a certain budget is the main target market.Marketing Mix Variables Price: It will also have to consider the budget levels of the chosen target market. As setting an optimal level would then result in a demand, whereas if the price is placed too high, it could hinder demand and if price the price is placed too low, although it may create a large demand, however operating costs might not be covered and could result in financial losses. Product: The product will be the standardized menu that has been set all around the world. This will include the food items which taco be ll is known to be most famous for.Although it will serve the standard types of food items, in order to suit the Hong Kong market it could also then explore the tastes and trends of the local population and their eating habits, which could be incorporated within the restaurant menu. Place: The perfect locations to reach out to their consumers, would be to open their branches within our minutes away from local university campuses, this would result in easy accessibility for the students who would be able to pick up and go, or have the option to eat within the restaurant premises.Besides catering to the students, to make it convenient for the working population of Hong Kong, the best locations would be opening stalls and restaurants within an office building premise or shopping malls which are placed around the commercial areas of Hong Kong, in order to create ease of accessibility to the working population of Hong Kong. Promotion:Methods such as advertising is a great opportunity, as Taco Bell is already a well established fast food chain, hence posting advertisements on local newspapers and magazines can immediately create effects as the reports show that 1 in 7 people in Hong Kong read some sort of newspaper or magazines on a daily basis. This method is the most appropriate in terms of creating brand awareness within Hong Kong. Furthermore, through the aid of promotional websites such as www. groupon. com. hk and www. beecrazy. com. hk that promote upcoming products, services and offers can definitely help reach out to their potential consumers and create demand. These methods can definitely bring positive results, once the promotion period starts. Conclusion To conclude by implementing the correct marketing mix methods and taking account of the various factors which was looked through in the PEST analysis, it can be drawn to conclusion that although Taco Bell will enter the market with relatively high competition, however due to the already well established br and name and the fact that its products tend to differ quite significantly in comparison to the leading competitors, it can gain from being diverse.

An investigation into the ways Essay
An investigation into the ways in which the language and the subject matter of Hamletââ¬â¢s three soliloquies reveal the key concerns of the play. The most common portrayal of Hamlet is of a person seeking truth in order to be certain that he is justified in carrying out the revenge called for by a ghost that claims to be the spirit of his father. Other views see Hamlet as indecisive or even unwilling to carry out a duty of obligation to his murdered father. The purpose of Hamletââ¬â¢s soliloquies is to outline his thoughts and feelings, it reveals his innermost beliefs and offers an unbiased perspective as it is merely him talking to the audience, albeit not directly. Each soliloquy delves further into Hamletââ¬â¢s motivations, or lack thereof, and psyche. Each soliloquy, each slightly different, is all united by vivid imagery, introspective language, and discussion of Hamletââ¬â¢s delay of action. Shakespeare reveals the key concerns of the play inevitably, meaning it touches on love, betrayal, murder and revenge, which where commonly found in plays around the time Hamlet was written. Therefore, Hamletââ¬â¢s first soliloquy (Act 1, scene ii) is essential to the play as it highlights his inner conflict caused by the events of the play. It reveals his true feelings and as such emphasizes the difference between his public appearance, his attitude towards Claudius in the previous scene is less confrontational than here where he is directly insulted as a ââ¬Å"satyrâ⬠, and his feelings within himself. In the first soliloquy Hamlet appears very distressed even contemplating suicide. He desires his flesh to ââ¬Å"meltâ⬠, and wishes that God had not made ââ¬Å"self-slaughterâ⬠a sin. As dew does, Hamlet wishes to evaporate with the sunrise and leave his troubled kingdom behind. He says that the world is ââ¬Å"weary, stale, flat, and unprofitableâ⬠. Stating that he thinks of life as nothing else but tedious and foul, which causes one to assume that he believes that it is better to die then live a life full of pain and agony. After describing his desires for death, Hamlet then continues to describe the state of his kingdom as an ââ¬Å"unweededâ⬠garden. Hamlet seems to view Denmark as a metaphorical Garden of Eden which is now totally corrupt, Perhaps Hamlet is to become the gardener and solve the infestation of corruption. Hamletââ¬â¢s despair stems from his motherââ¬â¢s marriage to his uncle and it is this that is the driving force behind what is communicated. His constant repetition of the time in which it took the two to get married, ââ¬Å"But two months deadâ⬠¦yet within a monthâ⬠¦A little monthâ⬠¦Within a monthâ⬠¦most wicked speedâ⬠, suggests his disgust at the situation. One instance it can be seen is in the first soliloquy ââ¬Å"for I must hold my tongueâ⬠this shows that Hamlet cannot share his thoughts, therefore he must keep his feelings hidden behind his appearance. In comparison, in the second soliloquy Hamlet talks of Claudius as a ââ¬Å"smiling damned villain!â⬠here he is implying the evil reality behind Claudiusââ¬â¢s genial appearance. This key theme of betrayal makes the play very dramatic in places as it creates a sense of impending evil. In the second soliloquy Hamlet expresses his anger at the accession of his uncle Claudius and at his motherââ¬â¢s hasty remarriage. Hamlet encounters the ghost of his dead father, who informs him that he was murdered by Claudius, and commands Hamlet to avenge him. Hamlet is unsure whether the ghost he has seen is truly his father, and suspects that it might be an evil spirit impersonating him. He therefore sets out to test the kingââ¬â¢s conscience through feigning insanity, and by staging a play re-enacting the circumstances of the murder, ââ¬Å"The playââ¬â¢s the thing, Wherein Iââ¬â¢ll catch the conscience of the Kingâ⬠. (Act II, scene II) Shakespeare makes Hamlet end his soliloquy with two excellent lines as they round up the whole soliloquy; ââ¬Å"the plays the thing, wherein Iââ¬â¢ll catch the conscience of the King.â⬠This explains his idea because if the Kingââ¬â¢s guilt shows heââ¬â¢ll have more proof, and is also a positive sign as he starts to get a more stable state of mind. Also the last two lines are rhyming couplets, which create the audience to react in such a way that Hamlet has somewhat a stable mind. Hamletââ¬â¢s melancholic language in his first soliloquy, ââ¬Å"But break, my heart,â⬠is in stark contrast to the determination and triumph in his second soliloquy ââ¬Å"yes, by heaven!â⬠. Furthermore, the structures in both soliloquies have some comparisons. In both soliloquies there is the use of broken syntax to show the raw emotion in Hamletââ¬â¢s voice. In his first soliloquy, ââ¬Å"But two months dead ââ¬â nay, not so much, not twoâ⬠the use of broken syntax shows how heartbroken and upset Hamlet is. The most famous soliloquy, ââ¬Å"To be or not to beâ⬠is a question that set the audience thinking. This is Shakespeare making Hamlet question his existence. It relates to the theme of corruption. Hamlet is asking himself if there is any point of him existing. This seems to be the case when Claudius and Polonius are spying on him. But when scrutinized it could be that Hamlet knows of the spying and is saying this just to confuse Claudius and Polonius more. This is very clever because although it seems like he is mad he is, in actual fact, not. The suggestion of death occurs throughout Hamletââ¬â¢s third soliloquy and the cruelty of life is victimized by fortune. ââ¬Å"To die, to sleepâ⬠, sleep is a metaphor for death. Hamlet uses violent imagery to represent his thoughts, ââ¬Å"The slings and arrows of outrageous fortuneâ⬠. He uses a metaphor ââ¬Å"a sea of troublesâ⬠to symbolize the variance in his mind. Repetition of the word ââ¬Å"Sleepâ⬠demonstrates Hamlet procrastinates, and is reluctant to kill his uncle. He is trying to escape from the problems and promises that await him. Hamlet compares life to a calamity, ââ¬Å"That makes calamity of so long lifeâ⬠. His words are punctuated with sorrow, ââ¬Å"mortal coilâ⬠. Hamlet is comparing his duties to timeââ¬â¢s brutality ââ¬Å"whips and scorns of timeâ⬠. Hamlet also expresses the longing to return to dust, a precursor of his later soliloquy where he contemplates the same idea. We feel a real sense of Hamletââ¬â¢s disturbed nature; whether he is actually mad or not is debatable, but that he is troubled by the weight of responsibility to avenge his fatherââ¬â¢s death is unquestionable. The mention of the ââ¬Å"quintessence of dustâ⬠is not fully expanded on at this point, but is effective in illustrating Hamletââ¬â¢s mental decline. He questions whether ââ¬Å"to be or not to beâ⬠and expresses a longing for the ââ¬Å"sleep of deathâ⬠, but a fear ââ¬Å"of something after deathâ⬠, preventing such actions. Hamletââ¬â¢s sentences are generally short and disjointed in this soliloquy, ââ¬Å"To die, to sleepâ⬠showing Hamletââ¬â¢s mood is agitated and he is distressed. Iambic pentameter is used in both the second and third soliloquies because it is a recognized poetic device and can reflect normal speech, which is the way Hamlet is supposed to be speaking. In the second soliloquy Shakespeare again includes lots of dramatic pauses to break up the speech and also to give a climax to what Hamlet will say next. The sentences are long in the third soliloquy, because Hamlet is almost talking to himself and so does not slow down or pause very often and so he rambles on, because his thoughts are ââ¬Å"running away from himâ⬠uncontrolled. Also, in this soliloquy Hamlet is philosophizing about death and whatââ¬â¢s after death and so he does not speak as he would if somebody else was there. The soliloquy is more realistic because if it rhymed then it would have to have been already thought up and it is supposed to be spontaneous. The sentences are rather disjointed showing Hamlet, at this moment in the play, as a slightly ââ¬Å"madâ⬠character. In this speech Hamlet repeats the words ââ¬Å"To die, to sleepâ⬠which helps to show that even though Hamlet tries to talk about something other than suicide he cannot help thinking about death as something as peaceful as sleep because thatââ¬â¢s what he wants to think.

Sykes Enterprises Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Sykes Enterprises - Case Study Example The mission of Sykes is to provide its customers with competitive rates so that it can provide its customers with the lowest rates. Sykes' strategy is to compete with the industry leaders on cost. It has to thus ensure that its operations stay profitable for it to continue its operations. Its mission and objectives are aligned with the amount of competition in the market and allows Sykes to target the same companies its competitors are targeting however, offering the lowest rates in town. There is no need to review the mission and objectives, but the strategy needs re-working. It is obvious that Sykes can take more than one action to improve its revenues and build a profitable business. The closure of its operations in India have resulted in consolidation of its costs in the United States. The competitors of Sykes have resorted to opening up call centers in South East Asian nations such as the Philippines to counter the high turnover costs and possible wage rises in Indian cities due to growing economies. One of the strategic alternatives for Sykes could be to introduce a culture of hiring fresh graduates and providing them training and binding them with contracts to serve Sykes for a period of two years. This would result in a significant drop in turnover for a temporary period. Reduction in the hiring and firing costs will result in lower running costs that will allow Sykes to offer lower rates to its customers. It would be wise for Sykes to continue its contracts with various towns and cities and gather benefits in taxation and other utilities offering employment in return. The reduction in taxes would result in a lower deductions in the revenues. The reduction would improve the profitability, though not necessarily the revenues. The current scenario asks for more involvement in the US rather than other countries. Significant cost reduction in Asian economies is no longer an onus and in countries that still offer lower operation rates, there is always the chance of high turnover costs and bad customer experiences - due to accents of offshore employees. Recommended Strategy Keeping into view the tough conditions of the economy, it would be wise for Sykes to combine the two strategies and work towards reducing its costs. Since Sykes mission and objective is reduction in costs to offer competitive rates in the industry, the two strategies could both be used to reduce the costs in order to provide highly competitive rates to corporate customers. This strategy would result in attraction of more corporate clients. However, Sykes should not close down any further call centers nor should it pursue an aggressive strategy within the US - current operations should be maintained until there is a significant rise in the profits. Implementation It would be wise for Sykes Enterprises to consider more large firms in the market other than SBC

Harlem Renaissance pt1 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Harlem Renaissance pt1 - Essay Example ugh many African American writers shared this ideology, which many considered militant in nature, some did not for more reasons they believed would stifle their creativity. Some Black writers during the Harlem Renaissance were not fully on board with the crusaders. Black poet, Stanley Braithwaite, encouraged interracial marriage as a means to solve the race problem, but Cyril Briggs, editor of a Black publication promoting militancy and racial difference âËâ the Crusader ââ¬â vehemently lashed out against such an idea as being ignorant and backwards. Another Black writer, Langston Hughes, wrote many works that appealed to both educated Black and white Americans, as he did not harbor animosity toward Caucasians. Hughes expressed in an essay that ââ¬Å"black artists intended to express themselves freely, no matter what the black or white public thought. Both authors reasoned that a racial motivation of opposition in the renaissance would work to suffocate their creative expression ââ¬â not augment it. With all of the well intentioned underpinnings of the Harlem Renaissance, not all African Americans were of one mind regarding artistic expression, as some Black writers of the time felt that following the New Negro Movement Crusadersââ¬â¢ ideology of militancy, pride, and racial difference would ultimately work to crush their expressive talents. Black writers such as Hughes believed that the major motivation and goal of the Harlem Renaissance was to break racial ignorance, let Black artistic expression thrive, and work as an agent to bring success and liberty to African Americans. So, even though Black writers such as Braithwaite and Hughes were not card-toting members of the New Negro Movement Crusaders, they were fully behind the movement forwarding the advancement and open creativity of African Americans during the Harlem
